Conclusion

In 2023, with the support of Luton’s Greener Future Fund, we embarked on a journey to reduce Luton Carnival’s CO2 emissions. Our research highlights our efforts and findings in promoting sustainability across various aspects of carnival preparation and delivery. By integrating eco-friendly materials into carnival costumes, such as upcycled fabrics and biodegradable embellishments, we took significant steps towards minimising environmental impact while maintaining the vibrancy of our cultural celebrations. The analysis of materials like PVA glue, contact glue, paper, cardboard, and foam helped us identify sustainable alternatives and practices, although challenges remain in achieving performance parity and cost-effectiveness.

Our focus on reuse and recycling practices, coupled with the return to traditional crafting methods like willow lantern making, reinforced our commitment to sustainability. Sustainable arts education played a crucial role, fostering a new generation of environmentally conscious artists and encouraging community engagement through masterclasses and pilot programs.

Efforts to transition towards net-zero floats and implement green sound solutions were met with both successes and challenges. The introduction of push floats, cycle-powered floats, and e-cargo bikes significantly reduced emissions, though the unexpected fire and sound clash incident highlighted the need for further testing and refinement.

Our collaboration with organisations like We Are STEMs and Lionbeat underscored the importance of innovative approaches to sound solutions in parades. Despite setbacks, the deployment of electric-powered body speakers and sound systems attached to e-cargo bikes showcased our commitment to greener alternatives.

The outcomes of these initiatives were promising, with notable reductions in CO2 emissions and positive feedback from participants in our sustainable arts education programs. However, the increase in audience numbers in 2024 posed new challenges, emphasising the need for continuous monitoring and improvement.

Moving forward, our recommendations include enhancing reuse and recycling practices, promoting traditional methods, implementing green float solutions, increasing community involvement, and expanding sustainable arts education. By regularly utilising climate tools and documenting progress, we aim to further reduce our environmental impact and inspire others within the carnival community.

Ultimately, the development and implementation of our new Green Policy, guided by the findings of this project and resources from Julie’s Bicycle, is vital for ensuring the long-term sustainability of Luton Carnival and establishing a model for eco-friendly cultural celebrations. However, this can only be achieved with sufficient resources, highlighting the need for additional funding to continue the organisation's learning and development of green practices.
