Luton makes History by appointing an African queen to be the Mayor of Luton

We would like to extend congratulations to Maria Lovell who was sworn in as Mayor of Luton on Tuesday in a ceremony that took place online due to coronavirus.

Maria Lovell, pictured here in ceremonial robes for her official Royal title of HRH Nana Abena Asantewaa I, is also the founder of the Ghana Society, which since 2006 has been an important part of our carnival family, each year taking part in Luton International Carnival to celebrate and showcase West African culture in our diverse town.

Councillor Lovell is the second black woman to serve as Mayor in Luton, and the first of African heritage.

Congratulations Maria!
