Outcomes

Julie’s Bicycle supports Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations (NPOs) by providing essential environmental training and development. They also provide climate tools, including the Creative Green Tools, a set of free online carbon calculators for the creative industries. We used these tools to calculate our CO2e emissions.

Mas Camp – (Carnival costume makers space)

Through the focus on Reuse-Recycle we reduced our Co2e output by 12%. However, the majority of our output, at 54%, is due to energy use of our studio spaces.

Until the advancement of technology to produce more sustainable alternatives to foam and contact glue as well as the development of a commercial market in the UK for these alternative products along with low voc acrylic paint and non voc emulsion we are limited on how much further we can reduce our Co2e regarding material for costume construction while retaining the quality and artistic merit of our costumes. However per costume we are producing 45% less Co2e than a mass-produced dress on the high street.

Sustainable Education

Masterclasses

76 participants of which 100% reported that they enjoyed the masterclass.

100% reported that the masterclass helped develop their knowledge.

100% reported that they planned to use what they learned in their arts practice over the next year.

Work Experience

50 students of which 100% reported that they enjoyed the workshops.

79% reported that the workshops up-skilled them and helped develop their knowledge.

77% reported that they planned to use what they learned in their arts practice over the next year.

Sustainable Carnival Discover Arts Award

14 pupils achieved the nationally recognised achievement certificate with 100% of pupils successfully completing their sustainable costumes and participating in Luton Carnival Parade.

Riki Cycle Show

Approximately 100 people of which approx. 70% were children and young people and 30% were adults.

Music

The green powered speakers used in the parade, did not have the anticipated impact. Further testing in smaller parades that we attend and support would be beneficial to refine and develop the system for greater impact at Luton Carnival 2025[CW1] .

Parade

Through the reduction of truck floats and the introduction of mini trolly floats in our parade, enabled us in reducing our Co2e output by 93%.

Event

2024 saw a 9% increase in our Co2e. This increase is due to the increase of our audience numbers which in turn increases Co2e caused by audience travel to the event. However, an audience like for like comparison shows a 17% decrease from 2023.

Environmental Policy

Developing and launching our organisation's environmental policy has led to significant positive outcomes. It has enhanced our sustainability practices, supported the reduction in our carbon footprint, and inspired eco-friendly initiatives. This policy underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship, fostering a culture of responsibility and innovation.
